The new refill point will provide free drinking water for residents and visitors. It supports ongoing work to reduce the use of single use plastic bottles and to encourage more sustainable behaviour along the coastline.
Working with Our Only World
The installation is being carried out in partnership with Our Only World, a Cornwall based marine conservation charity that works to reduce plastic pollution and restore ocean health. Newquay Town Council would like to acknowledge that the water fountain is being provided to the Council by Our Only World and thanks the charity for its continued commitment to improving access to sustainable facilities across Cornwall. Tina Robinson, Founder of Our Only World, said:
“We are pleased to continue our partnership with Newquay Town Council and are proud to install a water refill station at Watergate Bay. We extend our sincere thanks to our sponsors, The Mandy Thornton Trust and Metal Work Solutions, for their support. Over the lifetime of this unit, we hope to prevent approximately a quarter of a million single use plastic bottles from entering the environment.”
About Our Only World
Founded in 2019, Our Only World is a Cornwall based charity that leads practical and community focused environmental projects. Their work includes the development of water refill stations manufactured in the United Kingdom using recycled fishing nets, the creation of SeAlive Tiles which help marine species thrive on man made harbour walls, and a children’s book series titled Yikesy Meets Gaia, produced in collaboration with local primary schools. The charity also delivers creative outreach projects including music, video and educational programmes.
The charity has installed more than twenty refill stations in Cornwall, as well as units in Eastbourne, Essex, Torpoint and Weston super Mare. Further installations are planned across the country.
Reducing Plastic Pollution
Plastic bottles remain one of the most common types of waste found on beaches and can take up to 450 years to break down. By providing free and accessible drinking water, refill stations offer an effective alternative to buying bottled water and help to reduce waste entering the environment. This approach supports the protection of Cornwall’s coastline and the wider marine ecosystem.
